Quick App Review: WordPress 2

Considering that this is a WordPress blog, I thought that I would do my first iPhone app review on the WordPress app (recently released WordPress 2). I am writing this post from the application on my iPhone and I intend to keep them short as the title suggests. (Inline images added through WordPress Admin)

The app is quite simple and well set out for ease of navigation. The setup is as simple as inputting your blogs web address, username and password. The app contains three sections; Comments, Posts and Pages.

The comments section allows you to approve, unapprove or edit user comments. The posts and pages sections allow you to review, add or delete posts or pages and their content.

Overall the app works well and is extremely easy to use. I can see this app being quite handy for posting on the run or when you just don’t want to sit in front of your computer. A couple of things that I can think of to improve the app would be; the ability to add a hyperlink to a post or page and the ability to add inline images into posts or pages.

The app did crash on me once while I was adding a category but reopening the app recovered my unsaved post as per the pic below…

Word 2007 Docx to WordPress Post

Microsoft Word 2007 comes equipped with a feature that allows you to publish a .docx document as a post on your blog. The setup is quite simple and only requires a few short steps:

1. Open the .docx file that you want to publish as a post on your blog.

2. From the Office Menu Orb, select Publish -> Blog.

3. Select Publish from the Blog Post ribbon.

4. Click the Register an Account button.

5. Select you Blog Provider from the drop-down menu (in my case WordPress) and click Next.

6. Input your Blog Post URL and your blog User Name and Password then click OK.

The open document will now be published as a post on your blog and your blog account is setup for future use in Word 2007.

Enable Word 2007 to WordPress

Microsoft Office 2007 allows you to publish a .docx document to a blog and WordPress is one of the supported blogging systems. However, while attempting to register my blog for publishing with Word 2007, I received the following error:

To resolve this error the XML-RPC option needs to be enabled on your blog. The setting can be found by browsing to Settings -> Writing and ticking the “Enable the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols.” check box.

WordPress MU & SMF Intergration

Recently I was asked to create a forum for our teachers to use to communicate with their students. As a few ofd our teachers are currently using WordPress to post their blogs we decided to find a web2 forum system that would integrate well with WordPress. I have previously used and like Simple Machine Forum (SMF), so I decided to see if WordPress and SMF would play nicely together.

My first result was the WP & SMF plug-in for WordPress. This plug-in once installed, allows you to create users in WordPress and have them automatically populated into your SMF user database. The plug-in also comes with three functions to allow you to show the following information inside WordPress:

1. The last SMF forum posts,
2. The last SMF forum topics,
3. The last SMF forum members,
4. SMF forum statistics; otal Members, Total Posts, Total Topics, Total Categories, Total Board, etc.

The WP & SMF plugin was relatively easy, although I did run into one error which was easily resolved. I will post the installation procedure and the resolution to the issue I encountered soon…
